THALASSA! THALASSA!

April 14, 1994

ONLY A FOOL tells a sailor that he has not seen something. I'll believe anything of the Sea, anything at all. The Sea is hidden, dark, dangerous. Seductive. The lifegiver, sister of death and destruction. Remorseless and clothed in beauty. The Sun contests her sullen majesty, but she awaits the night. And in her black, majestic depths there is eternal peace.

"The sea! The sea! Xenophon (430 - 355 BC) Anabasis, IV, 7, 24. Also Heinrich Heine (1797 - 1856), "Thalatta! Thalatta! Hail to thee, O Sea, ageless and eternal!" - Thalatta! Thalatta!
