MY COMPANION ASKED what I'd been doing over the weekend. Thinking to be witty, I responded, "Oh, taking an intensive course in emergency conflict resolution."
He was delighted, and prodded for details. "Where?"
"At the Richmond Rod and Gun Club."
Perplexed, how could that be? "What was the exact nature of this conflict resolution seminar?"
"Short range shotgun."
"Short range? I thought you couldn't miss with a shotgun."
"So did I until I found that you can."
"At six feet? That would kill the person."
"That's the point."
He was horrified. A Trojan horse disgorged shrieking enemies onto the dinner table. "I thought you were one of us, but you're one of them."
Echoing Freaks, I chanted, "One of us, one of us."
He didn't get it. Some people have no sense of humor.
