A washer and drier are, like symbolic speech, things that distinguish Man from the Beasts that Perish. No more trudging down to the "Date-a-Creep 24-hour Laundromat and Drug Emporium." No more blowing Saturday morning in the company of winos and derelicts keeping out of the cold, feeding endless quarters into a swindling, half-hearted piece of slum-lord junk. No more deciding that things can stand one more wearing, or ending up with all the clothing you possess in a big bag by the door. Civilization as we know it began with the invention of the washing machine.
Beasts that perish, i. e., that they do not have immortal souls.
