This morning at seven oclock they hitched me up to the machine, turned on the VCR and played a tape of Alfred Hitchcock's "Notorious". Two hours later they had a pale straw-colored pint of platelets, and I had bruises on the insides of both elbows, a good feeling in my soul, and a certificate redeemable anywhere in the universe for one pint of Ben and Jerry's ice cream. Any flavor I wanted: a pint of my lifes blood for a pint of Double Chocolate Fudge Swirl. This is a good deal.
