I lay on my back hidden in endless vanishing-point rows and in the silent stifling hot green-filtered summer afternoon I can hear the creaking of corn growing half-a-foot a day. Put my ear to the stalk and I can hear it. It's not like the rustling sound of hot wind-puff; it's not like the chirring of insects or stridulation of grasshoppers; it's not like anything. It's like hearing corn grow so fast that you can see it, you can measure it. Close to supper time my mother puts the water on and hollers out the kitchen window, "Kettle's on! Pick us some corn!" I rouse out of my half-reverie, and laden with fresh corn, sit on the stoop and shuck the ears. My great-grandmother's silver corn-holders hold the scalding cobs; roll them in butter, pepper and salt, and eat them with fresh cool tomatoes right out of the garden. Summer is the best time to be a little boy.
